After a month of winter conditioning with Coach Ashley Spencer, the official track season has started. The first practice was held on March 4, allowing the new seventh and eighth graders to see the events, pick what they want to try or do, and meet the rest of the middle school and varsity team. According to Coach Spencer, the number of track participants has almost doubled since last year.
For track, there are numerous different events that students can participate in. The running events for the track season are the 100 meter, the 200 meter, 400 meter or one lap around the track, the 800 meter, and the 1600 meter or one mile. The throwing events are discus and shot put. Discus and shot are very similar. In both, students have either a metal disc or a metal ball. The jumping events are long jump, high jump, triple jump, and hurdles. The other events are pole vaulting and javelin, but unfortunately for the middle school, those are only for varsity level.
“[I like the ] 4×1. I like running with my friends,” Karter Brown, 8th grader said.
Leading up to the first track meet, with Coach Spencer and Coach Jimmy Culler, the middle school practices four times a week. Practices are Monday through Thursday with an off day on Friday.
“I think everyone is very motivated and everybody seems to enjoy being pushed which makes practice fun and exciting,” Coach Spencer said.
