In-School Suspension (ISS) has been in the auditorium, and it’s been like this since the start of this year, making only half the auditorium is available for rec time. Turns out not only are the ISS and rec times in the auditorium, but there are virtual students in the auditorium as well. If a virtual student needs any extra help or attention, they can come from 1st to 4th period, and get help from Ms. Samantha McFarland, the ISS and hall monitor.
After talking to the virtual students, the auditorium being split in this way works fine, but the rec time students sometimes distract them. Other than that, they overall enjoy the layout and how they get space by being up at the top of the auditorium.
Mr. Eric Shaar, a paraprofessional and rec time monitor, said that the auditorium has been split in this way since he started working for the middle school, which was after winter break, in January. It works well with all the students, and gives everyone a nice amount of space to spread out and not be crowded.
Mr. Jeff Griffith explained that there are multiple levels of discipline in the school handbook, and certain amounts of warning before suspension and expulsion. They start with warnings, and move to things slowly, going from lunch detention, to after school detention, and to Saturday detention, then moving to In School Suspension, and finally out-of-school suspension and expulsion.
The reason behind the auditorium being shared for the virtual learning, ISS, and rec time is because of a lack of space. There isn’t enough space for them to all have separate rooms, and the classrooms weren’t large enough for the rec time classes to be split into them in a sensible group.
