This year, like many years before, the school store opened. It is run by Ms. Wendy Clibbens, 5th grade math and science teacher. Ms. Clibbens said she’s been working in the school store for about five years, but she didn’t do it in 2024 because she had arm surgery.
The reason she started it is that she realised a lot of students had trouble with making change, and she wrote for a grant from McDonald’s to get the materials needed to start up the store. The grant was for $500, and Ms. Tina Boyd, fifth grade ELA and social studies teacher, helped with the grant.
Ms. Clibbens decided to start teaching with the school store because she wanted to teach kids how to make change.
“It helps to teach business skills, responsibility, such as showing up, manners, organization skills, and teamwork,” Ms. Clibbens, 5th grade math and science teacher, said
Ms. Clibbens 5th and 6th period math class, along with Ms. Clibbens work the store Tuesdays and Wednesdays. They all chose to be in different groups, and all have done different things. Every group helps with different things, and the groups are the help group, the advertisement group, the cart and register group, the ethics group, the administration group, the inventory group, and the makers of passes and envelopes group.
The students in the class all did different things with the school store, one made passes, one trained other students, others just drew and hung posters, they all said they enjoyed the store and working in general, and enjoyed feeling more adult.
