Each year, seventh graders with a 3.75 or higher GPA are invited to apply to be in a high honor group called National Junior Honor Society, or NJHS. To apply to NJHS, each student must write an essay about what they will contribute to NJHS, as well as having a specific amount of community service within the past year. Each student must not have any major discipline referrals.
NJHS is run by Ms. Heidi Orrico, a 6th grade ELA and social studies teacher. This year, another group of hardworking students was inducted into the club.
“I think it went really well, the kids did really well,” Ayla Perry, NJHS secretary, said.
The induction was on Wednesday, March 11. There was a practice held on Tuesday, March 10, but there were only two 8th graders who attended. .
The NJHS has a fundraiser each spring and fall, selling candy bars, for the Special Olympics. They are still deciding if they are going to pressure the duct tape wars.
“Our main focus is service. Over the past several years, students have raised money for the Special Olympics through our Duct Tape Wars, which is coming up shortly, and assisted with our own competitors at our home Special Olympic competition,” Mrs. Orrico said.
