Ms. Cathy Baker has been a part of the Freedom Middle School community for over 20 years. However, on November 13, 2025, she retired, and Ms. Susan Wilkinson took over her job as middle school secretary.
“The perfect opportunity came up when my daughter had a baby this year for me to retire,” Ms. Baker said. She plans to help take care of and babysit the child since she has more free time.
“One of the best things about working at Freedom have been all of the friendships I made over the many years,” Ms. Baker said.
She was not only secretary, but also helped with the announcements. She helped take care of Ariel, the school therapy dog. Ms. Baker also took part in many fun activities such as assemblies and sixth grade CSI Week. Last school year, her role was the murderer for CSI Week.
“She always helped us with the announcements in the morning and kept everything organized. It won’t be the same without her,” Lucy Tyler (7), speaker for the announcements, said.
“She is very on top of it and always is very good at communicating things to us and what needs to be read,” Addison Stumpf (7), also an announcement speaker, said. “It was very helpful that she knew who everyone was. She was very nice to us.”
“I think [Ms. Wilkinson] is very nice. I think she will be a great addition to the school. She has worked in a school district for a very long time so I think she knows the ins and outs.” Ms. Erin Demetris, secretary, said. “I know [Ms. Baker] is greatly missed throughout the staff and school.”
“Ms. Wilkinson isn’t the same as Ms. Baker, but I think she’s pretty great.” Lucy Tyler (7) said.
Ms. Wilkinson has worked as a secretary and student support for Cornell Elementary School. She has also had a background in many programs for kids, such as the Scouts of America and community support.
“I do miss my old job,” Ms. Wilkinson said. “But everyone here seems so nice.”
