Gun violence in the U.S. has been a concerning issue for multiple reasons. Obviously, it endangers citizens, but it also affects the mental health of others. October is also Domestic Violence Awareness month.
The rates of school shootings in America are scarily high. This can have negative effects on many different things, such as the loss of kids’ lives, trauma, hiring, and spending. Schools may spend multiple billion dollars just to get new security to keep their students safe. Death by firearms is the number one leading cause of death among adolescents in the U.S., which is also 10 times higher than the rate of other high-income nations. Being exposed to a school shooting can lead to depression at a young age, leading to more serious issues like trauma or suicidal issues.
The threats and worries of gun violence raise people’s anxiety levels, which can lead to much worse. In 2023, 58% of all deaths caused by firearms were suicidal deaths. Most people don’t realize how realistic and serious an issue that suicide/mental health is, until it happens or is brought up in conversation.
In Pennsylvania, citizens are required to have a permit to carry a concealed firearm. In some states, such as Texas, a permit is not needed, which can cause more issues with an increase in number of shootings. For many decades, Pennsylvania firearm dealers have done background checks on any purchasers of a firearm. There is also a law that states that firearms are not allowed on college campuses in PA.
On April 17, a mass shooting took place at FSU (Florida State University). Florida also has weak gun laws.
