Academic Games is starting up, and the students are already preparing! Academic Games, also known as AGLOA (Academic Games Leagues of America), are all about challenging students to use higher thinking skills in the subjects of mathematics, language arts, and social studies. There are seven games, those games are equations, on-sets, linguishtiks, presidents, propaganda, theme, and current events.
“I have been coaching Academic Games for 22 years,” Ms. Jennifer Glover, Academic Games coach, said. Her favorite game to play is propaganda.
This year’s theme is all about Norse mythology. Norse mythology is a collection of stories, religious practices, and beliefs of the Norse people. Some of the main gods in Norse mythology are Loki, Thor, Balder, and Frigg.
“At county-wide tournaments, I do scoring, so once the score sheets are done, they come up to us, we put them in the computer system to generate the top scores for those games,” Ms. Glover said.
Nationals this year are being held in Charlotte, North Carolina, from Friday, April 24, to Monday, April 27, 2026. In order for students to get to nationals they must qualify in 2 county-wide games. In order to qualify in a county-wide game you have to get a score of a certain top percent that varies per game.
“Probably the contest [is what I am looking forward to].” Mason Weyandt (5), said.
Academic Games practices are held in Ms. Glover’s room every Tuesday and Thursday. The time they are held is from 2:40 to 3:30 and they are about 50 minutes long. This year’s county competitions are held at CCBC, Highland Middle School, and Ambridge High School.
“Maybe [I will make it to nationals], there are some that I’m good at,” Alexa Carr (6), said.
“If you are caught cheating, you get disqualified from that game, and if you are qualified to go to Nationals, you are no longer qualified to go to Nationals.” Ms. Glover said.
