In the courtyard, pumpkins and other varieties of plants are growing. Ms. Jeanine Ging, sixth grade teacher and Science Club sponsor, has been taking care of the courtyard along with the Science Club. Every year, before the school year ends, they take their time to plant around seven to eight pumpkin seed packets, which is around a few hundred seeds. They try to plant pumpkin seeds before the school year ends around May.
This year, a pumpkin ended up climbing up the tree.
“A parent called it out, I’m going to have to climb in the tree to get it out,” Ms. Ging said. The pumpkin in the tree is a unique and exciting experience for the Science Club.
The pumpkins this year, overall, have grown extremely well despite the fact that last year, none of the pumpkin seeds sprouted. The Science Club tried to use a few pumpkin molds, such as a heart, a cube, and a skull; however, none of them exactly worked.
“I think the hole for the stem was too small,” Ms. Ging said. Ms. Ging uses her pumpkins every year for the sixth grade Fall Fest. They do pumpkin math and do statistics with them, they will build derby cars out of them, and the rest they chuck on the trebuchet at the high school. In conclusion, the pumpkins get used every year for lots of things.
