s Easter passed, Sara Miller’s GATE class worked on Pysanky eggs. [Pa-sank-y] Pysanky eggs are Ukrainian Easter eggs. Students drew their design onto the egg. Then, they lit a candle and used a special tool called a kistka to melt wax and trace their design. After the students covered the design with wax, they dyed the egg their next color. They needed to dye the egg from the lightest color to the darkest.
“Dyeing eggs is a tradition, and this is a way to take it further. The more we learn from different cultures, the more we can recognize the things we can share, ” said Mrs. Miller. Times Magazine states that the name came from the Ukrainian language, meaning “to write.” Which makes sense since you have to write on the egg to map out your design.
“Ukrainian eggs are a great way to explore a new culture.” Cooper Valko, GATE student, said. This was an amazing experience for the students and an exceptional way to show creativity.
