NJHS stands for National Junior Honor Society. NJHS is a national student organization. The program highlights students’ demonstration of the five pillars: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship. When invited to join, students are required to complete an essay, get a community reference, and fill out their achievements. To be eligible for NJHS, students must maintain a 3.75 GPA. Grades aside, active participation in clubs, organizations, and the community is very important.
Twenty-seven students in seventh and eighth grade were inducted into NJHS on Wednesday, March 26. There was a ceremony with a reception after. At the ceremony, the students lit their candles from each pillar, and NJHS officers currently in the program gave a speech talking about each pillar.
“Being in NJHS has motivated me to keep my grades up and focus on school. I really like organizing the events and fundraisers, and I am excited to see the new members get inducted,” Madi Knopp, eighth-grade secretary for NJHS, states.
Mrs. Heidi Orrico has been the sponsor of NJHS for four years. Some of the things the organization does to raise money are Anderson’s Candy bar sales and the Duct Tape Wars. The money raised from the Duct Tape Wars was donated to Freedom’s Special Olympics Team.
“Getting inducted was important to me because I was qualified for it and it was something I could put on my resume. I am also most excited to help out with the fundraisers for NJHS,” Tia Yeck, a seventh grader, explains.
