Lockdowns in schools all over the nation affect students every day. It’s not uncommon for lockdowns and drills to occur daily, which is why safety is important. According to WestEd.org, about 95% of schools practice lockdown drills and are knowledgeable about lockdowns.
Lockdowns in schools are very important. Even practicing drills is recommended for all schools worldwide. In 2018, the Pennsylvania Legislature passed the School Safety and Security Act (Act 44), which offers new guidance for school safety solutions, such as lockdowns and fire drills. The legislation also provides training for school safety solutions. Lockdowns move students and staff out of the way of potential harm as quickly as possible. Some of the standard procedures are locking classroom doors, staying quiet, and following adult instructions.
“Students should take lockdowns [and drills] very seriously because it can put students at risk if students don’t listen,” Mr. Jeff Griffith, middle school principal, explained.
Even though lockdowns and drills may seem scary, it’s always best to listen to instructions. Some safety precautions you should take into consideration are being quiet, listening to your teacher(s), staying out of view from the classroom door, and staying as far away from the door as possible.
“I do not feel safe at school, because I think that our school sometimes doesn’t handle situations appropriately,” Tia Yeck, seventh-grade student, said.
All teachers are trained for these situations and are required by the state to undergo training. Every classroom has a bright yellow jamlock that can jam the door during lockdowns.
“I do feel safe at school because the teachers are trained on what to do during emergencies and we have multiple police throughout the school,” Elana Lehocky, sixth-grade student, said.
