Ms. Jeanine Ging runs the Science Club and Science Conference. The club has been around for a long time.
“Since we put the courtyard together. Before the greenhouse. About seven years,” Ms. Ging, coordinator, and sixth-grade teacher, said.
The Science Club has already kicked off the year and started off with a fun craft. The Science Club’s last meeting included the birds. They made crafts that would hang outside the lunchroom windows to prevent the birds from flying into the window. Last year there were a few incidents, but this year we hope to have no incidents.
“I’d like to focus on the sunflowers and pumpkin patches. There is always work with the butterflies,” Ging said.
Last year, the Science Club had problems with the shortage of pumpkins. Fall Fest participants use the pumpkins to make cars to race. Yeck’s Farm donated pumpkins last year. The hope is to not have the same issue this year. The sunflower seeds are also used for a project. Ging was not able to have the project due to a shortage at all last year.
The Science Club is already setting goals for the year. Although Ms. Ging helps run both, there is a difference in the sciences.
“Yes, but both are a lot of work. The garden is more physical work. Science Conference is time-consuming, and it puts statistics into real-world situations,” Ging said.
Science Conference is a yearly event that Ms. Ging’s students participate in almost every year. It takes weeks of preparation including a slideshow and a project. Dr. Brian Wargo, FHS physics teacher, hosts the event for his high schoolers and alumni but invites the sixth grade class to join.
“Dr. Wargo started the Science Conference. I had some students who could accomplish it,” Ging said.
The Science Conference will take place on Friday, May 2 at the High School. The students still have months to go, but it’ll go by quickly for the hard workers.
Both Science Club and Science Conference are similar in different ways. Each has different responsibilities.
