The Duct Tape Wars are returning this year from Feb. 18 through Feb. 21. NJHS runs this event as a fundraiser for the Polar Plunge. Last year in the Duct Tape Wars, a student for each grade got taped to the wall: fifth vs. sixth grade and seventh vs. eighth grade. Last year’s winners were seventh grade and sixth grade. They both won a movie in the afternoon.
This year, the Duct Tape Wars involved a teacher representing each grade getting taped to the wall, and whichever teacher hangs the longest wins. It was Mrs. Egley (7) vs. Mr. DeNome (8) and Mrs. Boyd (5) vs. Mrs. Spencer (6). For every dollar donated, you got one foot of duct tape. This year’s winners were Mr. DeNome for 8th grade and Mrs. Spencer for 6th grade. This year $188.25 was raised for the Polar Plunge.
“I don’t like it because it gets confusing when they keep switching the days,” eighth-grade student, Brooke Sarvey, said. This shows that the Duct Tape Wars have been very confusing this year. They kept getting rescheduled, and it was hard for students to remember what days it was and when to bring money. They were rescheduled for multiple weeks in a row for multiple reasons.
When the Duct Tape Wars started only one person bought a foot the whole week that duct tape was being sold. People started to buy Duct Tape the day the teachers were getting taped to the wall, but not before that. This could be because students just didn’t want to buy the tape or it could be because students didn’t know the date the wars started because of the scheduling issues.
Overall, the Duct Tape Wars were very fun and competitive, even though it kept getting rescheduled. The 6th grade and 8th grade won a movie afternoon. The Duct Tape Wars was also a great way to raise money for the Polar Plunge.
