Last year, I played on the Freedom Bulldogs fifth grade basketball team. The team was made up of Lilly Rachuba, Lucy Tyler, Viola Fasset, Tenley Feir, Aniya Zindren, and myself. There were only six of us. In basketball, five players play on the court at a time.
Lilly Rachuba, sixth grader said “ It was hard because we only had one sub and she got tired fast.” Sadly we don’t have a coach this year, so we do not have a team! There has been a lack of girls interested in playing basketball throughout all the grades.
Rachuba also said “Basketball is a great indoor sport in the winter to keep you active and fit.”
The seventh and eighth grade girls middle school basketball team only has eight girls on their team this year. According to Leagueoffans.org, “More girls are specializing in one sport year round and many of them are not choosing basketball.” Also it says that, ”Some girls believe basketball isn’t “girly” enough and the uniforms aren’t cute enough.” They believe this is part of the reason that girls basketball is declining nationwide.
”I like the jerseys, but the shorts are too long and not flattering,” Katilin Evans eighth grade basketball player said. This theory might be true. Would you play a sport even if you didn’t like the uniform?
