After four weeks of official practice, and before that winter conditioning, it is finally time for the 2024 track season. The first track meet of the season was on April 4. This meet was also the first home for Freedom in a year. Both home track meets in the 2023 season were canceled.
The first meet was against Burgettstown and Brentwood where the Freedom boys scored second with 47 total points, and Burgettstown scored 48. The girls scored third with 28 points, Brentwood in second with 39, and Burgettstown in first with 50 points.
The next meet was at Carylnton, which showed improved results. The boys won by a landslide with a score of 81, while Carlynton scored 19 points. The girls showed improvement with 49 points, but Carlynton still pulled ahead with 56 points.
The girls pulled ahead in the second home meet, this time against South Side, with a score of 72 to 26. The boys pulled through with a win, but with a closer score of 59 to 46.
“We are seeing personal records being sent each meet,” Jimmy Culler, 7th grade teacher and track and field coach said.
The last meet of the month was the Moon and Central Valley meet at Moon Area School District. Moon and Central Valley have some of the largest track and field teams, making it harder for smaller teams to compete.
“There is about 4,000 people, so I’m not confident, but I’m confident in long jump,” Gus Hickenboth, track player, said.
There are still three more meets this season, being against Beaver and Montour, The Riverside Invitational, and a Quaker Valley open meet.
