MathCounts is a competition where kids in grades 6-8 work on math questions in four ways and have a chance of going to states in Hershey. These four types of questions are Sprint where you have to answer questions on your own without a calculator, Target which is word problems with a calculator, Team where you work together with other students, and the countdown round which is a “buzzer-beater” round to determine the final 10.
The Mathcounts team placed second In the competition as a full group, But individually they had two finalists, Anthony Tusick, and Willis Bonzo.
“We had several students make it to the semifinals,” Mrs. Michelle McCanna, Math Counts coach, said”. “I find Math Counts to be fun and students are interested in it, so it’s more of a fun competitive atmosphere where students enjoy themselves.”
Math 24 is a simple game that you can play with friends! It is a numbers game where you draw a card with four numbers. You must use addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division to reach 24. If you get the card correct you gain 1 to 3 points depending on how difficult the card was.
The Math 24 competition is a yearly event that took place on March 7 at New Brighton High School. It has multiple rounds including normal math, decimals, fractions, and, double digits. These also are done in order with the tournament style of all the kids, the top 16, semifinals, and finals.
