This year, middle school students had another chance to participate in the high school’s musical; Matilda. Both high school students and middle school students worked together to create and perform an amazing show.
Some of the main roles were Lainey Tuszynski, playing Matilda, Lilly Burgess, playing the Trunchbull, Abby Hunter, playing Mrs. Wormwood, Christopher Denkovich, playing Mr. Wormwood, Cameron Stumpf, playing Lavender, Ryley Tavern, playing Bruce, and more. The musical was performed on March 1, March 2, and March 3, as well as a staff show for staff and their family and an elementary school performance that included some scenes out of the full show, during school hours, on Thursday, Feb. 29.
Last year, Freedom High School’s Drama Club had middle schoolers join the cast as well, but only those who were in middle school chorus were able to participate last year. This year, anyone in middle school was able to audition for either a role or an ensemble. This was the first time in a while that everyone had the opportunity to do so.
“The musical was the best time of my life.” McKenna Kalinoski, 6th grader, said. “I regret not doing it last year. There were some difficult parts, but in the end, it was 100% worth it!” She said. “I will without a doubt be auditioning next year too. It’s one of the most memorable things you could ever do. The feeling of walking on the stage is the feeling I will never forget in my life.” McKenna was an ensemble member, who played a doctor, (in the song Miracle,) and a school kid throughout the rest of the show.
