On Jan. 24, the National Junior Honor Society brought together school spirit for the first official Duct Tape Wars at Freedom Middle School. Starting on Jan. 22 and going until Jan. 24, students could buy duct tape at a dollar per foot during A and B lunch. All the money used to buy duct tape would go towards the Freedom Slush Puppies, Freedom’s Polar Plunge team to support the Special Olympics. According to Mrs. Heidi Orrico, NJHS sponsor and 6th grade teacher, NJHS raised $400.90 towards the Polar Plunge.
“I was ecstatic with the participation from all the middle school students and especially the 5th and 6th grade students. They really showed up to support the Special Olympics,” Mrs. Orrico said.
Leading up to Jan. 24, four students volunteered, one from each grade to be duct taped to the wall. Those students were Dominic Taddeo (8), Katelyn Vandecar (7), Carter Dambach (6), and Lincoln Hoover (5). In the 7-8 lunch, the 7th grade won, and in the 5-6 lunch, the 6th grade won, earning both the 6th and 7th grade a movie day.
According to Charlie Rywolt, NJHS member and 8th grade student, she thinks that next year if NJHS does the Duct Tape Wars again, that they would like to improve upon it by getting people more excited and get more publicity in the school for the Duct Tape Wars.
“I think it went really well, kind of hoped it [the duct tape] stuck a little longer,” Katelyn VanDeCar said.
