Did you wake up early this Black Friday to go shopping? Probably not as early as some people have during other years. Black Friday has changed a lot over these past years. Black Friday is considered one of the busiest shopping days of the whole year and is known to kick off the holiday season. Black Friday is a day when everyone shops with many deals, in-store and online.
Black Friday actually started in Philadelphia. In the 50s, 60s, and 70s, the Army-Navy football game was played on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Many people crowded for this game, most arriving the day before, Friday. This day was stressful for all police officers, because they had to deal with lots of mayhem. So, they started referring to the Friday before the game as ‘Black Friday’. Salespeople also continued to see a spike in sales at their stores, due to many people being in town. The name started to become national in 1985. Black Friday is considered one of the busiest shopping days of the whole year and is known to kick off the holiday season.
The past few years, online shopping has become more popular than in-store shopping. In prior years, Black Friday would be the day that people go shopping in-store with deals and Cyber Monday is usually when people shop with online deals. One of the reasons for this is because a lot of people start shopping and using deals, a few days or weeks before. Now, people shop online during both Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
“Yes, I did go shopping on Black Friday, this year. “I went shopping both online and in-store. Before, I refused to go shopping on Black Friday, but now, I love to find the best deals I can! I definitely go shopping online more than I have in the past years.” Mrs. Tina Boyd, 5th grade teacher said.
“I didn’t end up going shopping on Black Friday,” Mrs. Tina Strati, 6th grade teacher, said. “I used to go shopping when the stores opened at six o’clock in the morning. But, when they started putting out sales on Thanksgiving, I wouldn’t go because I would be spending time with my family. Now, it seems that a lot of stores start sales a week before Black Friday.”
Black Friday is a day that a lot of people love! So, next time you see all of those signs and discounts in stores near you, will you go shopping?
