As the season of Thanksgiving rises, the turkey population meets its downfall. In the year 2019, the Pennsylvania Game Commission announced the turkey population to be about 212,000. Sadly, only an estimated 159,000 turkeys inhabit the area of Pennsylvania. The average American eats about 1½ pounds of turkey at one Thanksgiving celebration.
According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, Thanksgiving is not the only reason turkeys are disappearing. This also happens due to losses of habitat, bad weather, predators, and disease.
However, turkey will most likely be bought more this year. The turkey expense has dropped, and is now about $1.18 per pound. Last year, the cost of turkey was $1.79 per pound. There is just one more hope for the turkey population, and that is vegetarians and vegans. There are many kinds of non- meat eaters, but combined, there are about 12,900 vegans and vegetarians in Pennsylvania. Though turkey is good, it is always better to be aware.
