This year’s sixth grade Fall Fest was on Thursday, Nov. 2, and Friday, Nov. 3. This will be the 10th year that the High School Physics Club and the sixth grade have come together to make a fun and exciting experience for everyone.
“The Fall Fest started in 2013 as a partnership between the High School Physics Club and sixth grade,” Ms. Ging, sixth grade math/science teacher and Fall Fest coordinator said. “This year I think it went exceptionally well. Every student had great behavior. Also, this is the beginning of the simple machines unit for science, so I like how students get to see a little taste of what we are going to be starting after Thanksgiving break.”
Every year, Fall Fest is two days long, usually in early November. Preparing the Fall Fest takes days to set up, but always has a great outcome. Some of the activities held throughout fall fest are the pumpkin car building, the mini trebuchet, the trebuchet, the pumpkin race, the pumpkin carving, and more. These activities are a very fun way for students to both have fun and learn, such as seeing what pumpkins go further by changing rope sizes, counting pumpkin seeds, and finding a way to balance a pumpkin on wheels to roll straight.
“I really liked Fall Fest,” said Isabella Volkwein, grade 6. “I would love to join the physics club when I’m in high school, it sounds like a really fun opportunity.”
“Fall Fest was really fun,” Kameron Brown, sixth grader said. “My favorite part was definitely the pumpkin races. If there was anything that could be improved, I feel like they could’ve given better directions.” He said. “I think I would like to join physics club when I am in high school, it seems very cool.”
The main trebuchet and the pumpkin race both were hosted at the high school with the Physics Club, while the rest of the activities mainly took place in the middle school. At the high school, sixth graders switch between the trebuchet and the pumpkin race in order for the Physics Cub to have time to set up the trebuchet pumpkins. Some sixth graders, picked at random, had the opportunity to pull either the safety or the trigger to fling the pumpkin.
Overall, this year’s Fall Fest went extremely well, and many are excited to see what next year’s Fall Fest has to offer.
